HTTP 404

This page explains how to make sure that you don't get accidental HTTP 404 errors on your website in future.

The HTTP 404 error appears when the computer which hosts the website cannot find the file that your web browser has asked it for. It's the equivalent of a shop assistant telling you that they don't stock an item. So that can you do?

The main causes of the HTTP 404 error are the following:

  • You have typed in the URL (the web address) of the page wrongly.
  • The link you clicked on was typed incorrectly.
  • The page used to be there - but time has marched on and the page has either been deleted or moved.
  • The computer hosting the website is behaving oddly.

In the case there the HTTP 404 is being generated because the file has been moved, it is usual that you are given a link to click on to go to the new location of the file. Sadly, though, when files are moved without thought for those who may still want to link to them, the HTTP 404 is the error that you will get. Don't panic, though, why not check that you've typed in the web address properly, and then (and only then) you could contact the webmaster of the website you're trying to find (go to their home page by simple typing in their domain e.g. www.domain.com and look for a contact page) and ask them if they could direct you to the page.

If all else fails, another good way to find your file is to use a search engine and search for phrases that you think may be in the file you are looking for. Quite often you will find that the page may be "mirrored" (e.g. duplicated) on other websites.

Just to relieve your tension, though, below is our "spoof" HTTP 404 message - enjoy!
